Please describe your vision of a world that works for
everyone.
In my opinion a world that works for everyone would be the one which
everyone is informed, educated, progressive, and diverse and also open
minded. This according to me would be an equalizing factor for everyone
because, if people were learned and not just schooled but actually went to
school for the purpose of acquiring education not just to do an exam and
move on to the next level, then we would be a better people especially here
in Africa, where the education system does not encourage innovative
thinking. I believe in education, I believe in knowledge, since with those
in hand a lot can change, and that's my vision.
What do you see as the most pressing problems facing the world today?
First is the abuse of drugs and alcohol especially by the youth. It is
worrying to see that most of the world's youth are dying due to substance
abuse or accidents that are related to substance abuse such as road
accidents. It is even more shocking to realize that despite all the efforts
placed on curbing drugs and campaigns against drunk driving, the youth are
still in danger. Second is the power wrangles in offices of leadership. The
world over we find that more and more leaders are emerging. In governments
it is evident to note that most leaders are not there because they want to
work for the people but rather that they are there to enrich themselves.
They get to appoint that they do not want to leave office and thus causing
chaos just so that they may remain in power. There is the problem of Poverty
which is experienced all over the world. Families go hungry; children have a
very high mortality rate, disease. There are also acts of terror which have
killed thousands of innocent civilians as well as wars which have left many
economies dead. Sexual abuse, Teenage pregnancies and HIV/AIDS are another
problem facing the world. It is true that the mortality rate of those
suffering from AIDS has reduced due to the Anti-retroviral drug. However the
spread of the disease is still prevalent especially among the youth. On the
other hand sexual abuse has been creeping up at us with a speed. Gone are
the days when we could trust anyone with our children or even the person
seated next to you on the bus.
How do you feel these problems could best be solved?
If countries were to find ways to solve conflicts without war then the
world would be a better place. If the youth would heed advice and actually
stop substance abuse then we would have a better breed of the youth. If
governments and citizens would try to curb poverty collectively and people
got better job opportunities then the world would be a better place. If
sexual crimes were reported as much as other crimes then this would not be
much of a problem. Lastly, if people were to follow the advice given on safe
sex or abstinence then cases of teenage pregnancies and HIV/AIDS as well as
STD's would be history.
Profile
My name is Angie Gichimu but my friends call me Ceh. I study in a University
in Kampala but I am Kenyan. I grew up in a small village in Kiambu district
in the central part of Kenya, however all my education was conducted in
Nairobi. I am a last born in of five, two sisters, two brothers and an aunt
to six nieces and nephews. I am currently a student at Kampala International
University pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mass Communication. In future I
hope to work for CNN international as a news anchor as well as become a
music producer. I am a confident person and even as I child I was very
outspoken as well as inquisitive. I was not shy and could say poems, dance,
sit with grown ups and entertain them. Being the last born in a family of
grown up siblings, I learnt at an early age to relate to people who were
much older than I was. I therefore find it easy to relate and interact with
people who are much older than I am. My hobbies include reading (of course),
swimming, cycling, cooking,
and computers and watching movies. I love music and can sing just a bit, I
can barely play the piano but I am hoping to learn. I am also in the process
of acquiring a guitar, which I cannot play but hope to learn once I get it.
I also hope to buy and revamp a Volkswagen Beetle, a dream I have had since
childhood. I recently joined AIESEC in my school and took up an active role
as the Local Chapter Vice President of communications, a task I am really
enjoying. I have never done anything like it before but I like the
challenge. I am a hardworking person who never thinks that anything is too
hard for me to do. I have been a member for a month now and within that time
I have learnt a lot about my self and even ways of working on my weaknesses.
I love Art especially African art and I am also a lover of fashion so, I
always try to incorporate African beadwork or jewelry in everything that I
wear. I have dreadlocks which I really love and wanted since I was very
young so my hair is one of my achievements that I am really proud of. I am
also a very outspoken person, fun-loving and easygoing. I like doing
everything to the best of my ability. I may not be the neatest person but I
love a sense of order. I can say that what drives me is the passion to make
a change in the world. Like Gandhi said, `be the change you want to see in
the world", I hope to make a difference in my AIESEC local chapter, my
campus my community and even my country. I believe in helping others as a
way to develop so in the future amongst my other dreams I hope to set up or
be part of an organization that helps those in need, because I have learnt
that helping those in need fills my heart with joy.
