Assessment by Nyanda George Dacris...

As A Man Thinketh
Assessment by Nyanda George Dacris (Cameroon)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The author is trying to make us know here that our characters, thoughts and body will reflect who we are. That as we reasoned that that is how our way of life will be and others around us. That the final outcome of our success will depend on us If we chose to enjoy or suffer, then it will be our wish and that if we chose to be rich or poor then all depends on us all. As we make our beds so shall we lie on it. In live we have what we have come to give as individuals so we will really need to think wisely so as to enjoy the abundant fruits that have been given to us. We need to open our eyes and see far. The type of person that we are, we want to be in the future all depends on us.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life

a. I have learned from the book that our thoughts shows what our character is.. In other to possess a good character our thoughts needs to work in relation with our character. Many people today have come to lost their dignity as regard their chair thoughts. So the early we think of readjusting our character to match with our thoughts the better because we will gain that positive reputation. The book goes further to explain that if we want to gain a good image of ourselves and that of others around us we need to watch our thoughts and characters so that will influence that of others around us. We should not have a crude thoughts and characters and go to preach change to others.

b. Our minds needs to be thinking to the right direction. If we tend to do this then we will succeed in life. But if we think the opposite direction, then we will have ourselves to blame. Our achievements or what we want to gain in this world will determine the way we reasoned. What we should know here is that the course want us to be example of good leaders, so if we want our world that works for every one, then we should try by all means to be thoughts and character conscious.

c. There is also this idea of Thought and serenity.. Only people who can sit down and reason out one or two things that can help the public are those who are sincere with their selves. This is because at any one time we at least need a calm, quiet, cool place to reason out some thing for our benefit.. We should learn to follow this process, this will keep us morally right.

d. In other to grow through thinking we need to open our minds for new ideas. If we do that we will grow rich and like wise the community. This is because most people in our society will not like to welcome ideas that will lead to their betterment. If we act in such a way how do we want produce a healthy environment.. So we should open our mind and be willing for a change.

e. I have equally learned that as much as our mind should be working , we need to clean our minds in other to refliect who we are. So ONES MIND IS LIKE A GARDEN AND THE OWNER THE GARDENER: So as a gardener we need clean our minds in other to have a smooth environment. The way we want our minds to work, we will be the ones to direct our minds to reason in that direction. If we want our garden to be dirty then we will be the ones to decide.

f. If I keep on Keep on dreaming for good things in life then shall be accorded provided I follow my thoughts up. I should not just dream and stay like that. Dreams and dreams and if nothing is done to match this dreams with something then we will keep on like that. So we should aspire great for future. We should try to have vision.

g. In anything we do we should a plan for that. This is because a good program can not be made when it was not planned for thus Purpose and planning: are two parameters to be follow up in relation to produce a good result.

3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world? If so, how?.

These ideas will help me know how to go about life. In other to have a clear knowledge of the society we need to use these ideas to keep us in tact with society norms. These ideas will keep me in good conditions to plan, how to think and to interact with my people in society. These ideas will help me a lot as others around me will benefit too.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you

"There can be no progress nor achievement without sacrifice, and a man's worldly success will be by the measure that he sacrifices his confused animal thoughts...He who would accomplish little need sacrifice little; he who would achieve much must sacrifice much. He who would attain highly must sacrifice greatly.”

From the above quote we see that in other to have some thing we need to sacrifices a lot. How much we will want to be, will be measure by how much we sacrifice. So we should always sacrifice much in order to have much.

“That mind is the master weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance, and that, as they may have hitherto woven in ignorance and pain they may now weave in enlightenment and happiness.”

As a master mind we need to keep it clear from all dirt and doing this we need to think wisely before taking any decision and this decision will be the one to determine who you are for live time.

‘Men imagine that thought can be kept secret, but it cannot’

Thoughts is something that can not be kept secret. What ever thing we conceived in mind will be visible in our character and this will go a long way to show us as such competence. We should learned to act responsibly so as to gain the reputation of the public and thus a healthy community.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

I am not clear with this quote "Cherish your visions; cherish your ideals. Cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts. For out of them will grow all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment; of these, if you but remain true to them, your world will at last be built

6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?

The few exercises which I noticed were treated as required. I find them very helpful.

7. Was there anything you read in the book that you would like to comment on that was not covered in the previous questions? If so, please comment.

None.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull
Assessment by Nyanda George Dacris (Cameroon)

1. What is the main idea that the author is trying to convey in the book?

The author is trying to convey here that as human being, we have limitations. And that despite our limitations if we learn how to learn and accept new ideas, rather than confining ourselves to a particular standpoint. If we distant ourselves from things that are keeping us from achieving goals and making change then we are on the verge of succeeding in life. as Jonathan Livingston Seagull worked tirelessly to set an example to other birds that despite their traditional belief they can still create a change in life. If we follow this example of this lone bird who was going to let things down and worked for the good, that is an eye opener to other birds then our generation will be the best as talented leaders will emerge thereof.

2. What were the seven ideas which were personally most important to you and why? List these seven ideas followed by an explanation after each one as to why it was important to you. Use personal examples from your own life.

a. That we should not depend on our limitations. Jonathan Livingston Seagull was a distinguish bird that was willing to bring a change to other birds despite their old believe that was bidding them together and confining them to tied. He worked tirelessly and never gave from his goal. From this experience I have learned from here more.

b. We should be able to welcome change. What ever thing we are doing we need to welcome change. Jonathan Seagull was a bird that despite his great potential of gifts, he did not just want to stay like that. He tried by all possible means to exploit them, and not only doing so but doing it perfectly for a change. Finally he achieved his goals. So if we follow this example we will succeed in life.

c. At any one time we should learned to appreciate people who make remarkable changes in life. Though the change will always take a long, stress and obstacle to come but we should learn to encourage others rather than being a stumbling bloc to progress. Jonathan Seagull had encountered many obstacles in life before he could make a change in life. I have learned from his experience and will know how to manage my life too

d. If we should succeed in life we should always know what we are looking for. If we have that at hand then we will now know how to go about it. Many people are suffering today because they don’t have any aim in life. Jonathan Seagull being talented as he was set his goals and followed it promptly to the end. That is why we see him succeed as a great bird thereby distinguishing himself from other birds. Thus Praises were given to him.

e. In life we need constant practice. As more as we carryout a practice we will need to know that more better. As the saying goes ‘Practice makes perfect’ .Despite how many times fail in life we need to keep on for the battle. Jonathan despite how many times he failed he kept on trying for success until it came.

f. All what we need in life to is to succeed. We need to always aspire for changes that will lead to development. Even through hard work since learning takes many ways for one to understand life. If in life we follow up our goals the right way then we will succeed. And if we don’t then we will surely have ourselves to blame.

g. The way we reasoned in life that is how we will be. There are many opportunities in life to exploit and it is only those who are foresighted can do that. Those campaigning for free world and for change can do just that. If Jonathan sat and was relying on the old tradition, none of the seagulls would have ever known their straight. So if we exploit our straight the right way and reason to that direction then we are on the verge of succeeding.

3. How will these ideas or lessons help you in a practical way, both in your daily personal life and in helping you to create a better world? If so, how?

Firstly i come learned a lot from the ideas from this book. There will greatly help me know how to go about life. That is to say I know I have limitation in life and I will not just sit and full my arms but I need to work to come out of the bondage of poverty. I will use Jonathan’s example to do just that.

Secondly, from the book I have come to know that in order to succeed in life I need to work hard and I know I will pass through obstacles. But that not withstanding I will know how to go about life and to have a sound interaction with others of my kind. I will need to work hard with people of my I.Q to foster development and create change the world.

Also I have come to know that we have many potential opportunities to exploit. And to do this I need to be open to the world. Rather many people will not take this serious but it is only with this that our success will be guaranteed. And if we want any change we need to worked hard. From the beginning it will seem hard but after a certain time things will be easy and that is when success will start flowing.

Lastly these ideas will help me to set my proposals. Many people are out suffering because they are not following the right tract. They tend to depend on tradition forgetting to know the benefits that awaits them if they break the bondage of failure. So will need to sensitize them on this.

4. Quotes: Are there any statements, which the author made that particularly got your attention? If so, please quote them and comment as to why they were important to you.

For each of them, the most important thing in living was to reach out and touch perfection in that which they most loved to do, and that was to fly.

To achieve our goals we need to know what we need and worked for it Once we worked for that goal continuously, we will have it. And it is only through hard work that we will reach out and touch perfection as was the case with Jonathan.

Such promises are only for the gulls that accept the ordinary. One who has touched excellence in his learning has no need of that kind of promise.

Like other birds, Jonathan worked hard to make himself and impact highly felt among his companions. If one is determine to do some thing in life he has to distinguish himself from others to deliver the goal As brilliant an Jonathan Seagull was he figured out himself and immediately he attained perfections other birds were very happy with his experience and others were even prepare to follow his examples. That is exactly what we should do

Stand to center meant only great shame or great honor.

I find this important this if we out to create a change, we will be criticized and when we attain the goal we will be honor and if fail, it will be a great shame. So in any endeavor we are carrying out we should try and succeed so as to have that great honor and thus encourage others to learn from our foot steps. At this juncture we will be like mentoring others to do just what we have done and thereby producing an up to date environment

‘It always worked when we know what we are doing.’

In other to get to a point we need to exactly know our selves and what we are going to do. From here we will strike perfection. Jonathan knew his goals in life that is why he worked hard to over come his limitations. If we follow this example then we will always succeed in our endeavors.

5. Is there anything in the book that you do not understand or are unclear about, or are there ideas which you disagree with and, if so, why?

I was unclear with this “faith is not needed when doing something, but you need understanding to do it.” For me I think if I faith in doing something I will do it. So I don’t know how you look at it.

6. Did the book contain exercises for the reader to complete? If so, did you complete all of the exercises and did you find them helpful?

Yes. The exercise on how are limitations are, whether to depend on it or to break bounds are my consent. I have started to work on it. I have to set an example too like Jonathan Seagull.

7. Was there anything you read in the book that you would like to comment on that was not covered in the previous questions? If so, please comment.

I have learnt to over come the barriers that are pasting me on a stand point. This will be taking seriously.
